Laser Treatment for Acne Scars

Everyone carries a few reminders of the past. Maybe you have a scar on your leg that reminds you of when you played with your childhood friends. However, acne scars that mottle your otherwise clear skin are a different story.

To erase the signs of your battle with acne, our staff at Hampstead Family Medicine and Burgaw Medical Center uses the Icon™ laser by CynoSure®. Keep reading to discover how our staff uses laser technology to reduce acne scars for people just like you.

How scars form

Your scars are the result of your body’s healing process. When your tissue is wounded, your body produces collagen and sends it to the wound site to heal the damaged tissue.

The blood supply to the wound site increases, too, so more nutrients are carried to speed up the recovery. Sometimes, your body produces more collagen than necessary, and the extra collagen is what causes scarring.

After your wound heals completely, your body reduces its collagen production and blood supply to the wounded area, making the scar smoother and paler.

Scars are permanent, but some do fade after a couple of years. If your scars don’t go away on their own during this time, it’s unlikely that they’ll fade as time passes by without treatment.

Using laser technology to smooth out scars

It may seem counterintuitive, but the damage caused by excess collagen can be fixed with more collagen. Lasers can trigger collagen production, but they do so in a controlled environment. The Icon laser uses tiny means of energy to cause microscopic wounds that break through the tough scar tissue. As a result, your body starts ramping up its collagen production.

However, because the wounds are microscopic, there won’t be enough collagen to create a second scar. Instead, they’ll only be enough to heal the wounds and smooth out the skin. You may need several sessions to break the scar tissue, but once your scar disappears, the results will be permanent.

What to expect during the procedure

Although laser technology may sound scary, it’s nothing like what you’ve seen in your favorite sci-fi movies. The lasers used in a clinical setting are gentle and come with built-in cooling systems, so you’ll never have to worry about an overheated skin. Side effects are mild, as some patients may experience some discomfort and redness. The laser treatment doesn’t require any downtime, and most treatments last about 30 minutes.
